Land Frozen IQF Moonfish

The long-held belief that no fish could be fully warm-blooded from head to tail was overturned by the discovery of the sea-frozen moonfish. It remains the only known fish to exhibit complete endothermy, with warmth extending throughout its entire internal system rather than being confined to a few isolated regions. While some highly active species-including certain sharks and tunas-direct heat solely to the brain or eyes, the rest of their bodies stay subject to the surrounding water temperature. The moonfish breaks free from this constraint, flooding its muscles, organs, and extremities with metabolically generated warmth. Its secret is a remarkably dense vascular network within the gill chamber, where incoming and outgoing blood flow in opposite directions just fractions of a millimeter apart. This arrangement allows heat to transfer efficiently from the exiting blood to the entering stream, creating an almost fully closed thermal loop. The benefit is significant: in the icy, lightless depths of the open ocean, where cold-blooded hunters grow sluggish and slow, the moonfish maintains crisp speed and responsiveness, keeping its muscle temperature steadily around 9°F (5°C) above the surrounding water, regardless of depth or darkness.
