Frozen Sea Mussel

Our Frozen Sea Mussel consists of premium, fully grown Mytilus edulis (blue mussel) or Mytilus galloprovincialis (Mediterranean mussel), harvested from certified, low-density culture ropes in the cold, nutrient-dense waters of the North Sea and Galician Rías. The mussels are purged in sterilized seawater tanks to remove sand and grit, then steam-cooked, shucked, or left on the half-shell before blast-freezing at -40°C to lock in the plump, juicy texture and sweet, briny essence. Unlike chewy or dried alternatives, our frozen sea mussel meat remains tender and succulent after thawing, with a deep orange or cream-colored flesh and a clean, ocean-fresh aroma. Available as whole meat (no shell), half-shell, or fully cooked and vacuum-sealed. Each pack contains 70–80% meat-to-shell ratio (for half-shell), with sizes ranging from 30–50 pieces per kg for meat-only, or 15–25 pieces per kg for half-shell. Nutritionally, sea mussels are exceptionally rich in vitamin B12, selenium, manganese, and long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA), while providing 18–20g of protein per 100g serving with only 1.5g of fat. Perfect for paella, pasta marinara, white wine and garlic broth, steamed mussel pots, or battered and fried. Packed in 1kg poly bags, 5kg bulk cartons, or 10kg IQF flow packs. Shelf life 24 months at -18°C. Halal, BRC, and Friend of the Sea certified. Ideal for wholesale, foodservice, and retail export worldwide.

FAQ

Why choose us

Q: Can you freeze fresh, live mussels directly, or is there a better approach to freezing them?

A: Freezing a fresh, live mussel is not advised, as you will find a huge loss in both texture and sweetness upon defrosting. If you do wish to freeze mussels, the preferred method is to cook them all up first and then freeze the cooked product.

Q: What is the recommended maximum storage time for frozen mussels to maintain best quality?

A: Properly stored, commercially frozen mussels will maintain best quality for about 10 to 12 months in the freezer. Shucked shellfish can be frozen for up to three months, while cooked shellfish also maintain quality for about three months in the freezer.

Q: Are frozen mussels safe to eat after the "Best By" date on the package?

A: Yes, if properly stored, commercially frozen mussels will typically carry a "Best By" date, but this is the manufacturer's estimate of peak quality, not a safety date. Frozen mussels that have been kept constantly frozen at 0°F (-18°C) will remain safe indefinitely, as long as they have been stored properly and the package is not damaged.
