Distinctive Characteristics
From Backup to Backbone
The Indian mackerel was long treated as a secondary option, passed over in favour of bigger, more desirable species. But as those traditional stocks declined, fleets and processors had little choice but to shift focus. What they found was a fish remarkably suited to high-volume harvests. It has since become a cornerstone of both food security and coastal livelihoods.
Camouflage in Two Tones
A slim, slightly flattened body cuts through the water beneath a coat of fine, slippery scales. The upper surface reads as deep charcoal, traced with faint, meandering bands. The underside shifts to a whitish silver with just a hint of yellow. This split-colour arrangement is more than decoration - it scrambles the fish's outline whether viewed from above against the dark depths or from below against bright surface light.
Built for the Long Haul
No detail of its anatomy is wasted. The snout narrows to a point, the oversized eyes are partly shielded by fatty tissue, and the crescent-shaped tail is deeply notched. Every element converges on a single outcome: the ability to cruise long distances with minimal effort, typically in dense, synchronized groups.
A Rhythm Set by Nature
Landings rise and fall in two distinct seasonal waves. The first builds from late winter through spring, and the second arrives around the middle of the year. These peaks follow spawning cycles and shifts in feeding grounds, creating a supply pattern that is reliable and well understood by those who depend on it.
