Distinctive Characteristics
The Indian Mackerel is often called an "economic transition" species. In an era when many larger traditional food fish have become harder to find, this fish has risen in importance. Its plentiful population now underpins much of the region's food security and sustains a significant part of the fishing industry, making it a true staple.
Its appearance is equally remarkable. The body is spindle-shaped, robust yet slightly flattened, and covered in fine, smooth scales. Along the back, a deep bluish-black surface is decorated with dark, wavy bands, while underneath, the belly gleams white with a subtle yellow cast. This distinctive look is thought to explain the name "white surface."
Built to cruise, the Indian Mackerel possesses a conical head, oversized eyes with protective fatty lids, and a strong, forked tail. These features allow it to roam the open sea in large, fast-moving schools.
Its availability is highly seasonal. The most productive periods arrive from February to May, then return between July and August, mirroring the species' spawning and feeding cycles.
