Blue Mussel Meat

Our Blue Mussel Meat is sourced exclusively from Mytilus edulis grown in the cold, pristine waters of Prince Edward Island (Canada) and the west coast of Scotland. The mussels are rope-cultured, ensuring they remain free of grit and sand, then harvested at peak condition when the meat is plump and sweet. Within hours, they are depurated in sterilized seawater, steamed open, and hand-picked to extract the whole meat-including the adductor muscle and mantle-without any waterlogging or mechanical damage. The meat is then individually quick-frozen (IQF) or packed fresh on ice, presenting a uniform, teardrop shape with a rich apricot-orange to pale cream color. Unlike half-shell products, our blue mussel meat offers zero waste and 100% yield, with a tender, juicy bite and a clean, mild brininess devoid of any fishy aftertaste. Each 500g bag contains approximately 80–120 pieces, ideal for paella, seafood chowder, pasta, or as a topping for pizza. Nutritionally, a 100g serving delivers 19g of protein, 2g of fat, 300mg of DHA/EPA, and an excellent source of vitamin B12 (over 400% DV). Packed in resealable poly pouches or bulk 5kg cartons. Frozen shelf life: 18 months at -18°C; fresh shelf life: 7 days at 0–4°C. Halal, BRC, and Ocean Wise certified. Wholesale, private label, and air-freight export available. Perfect for food manufacturers, restaurants, and home cooks seeking convenience without compromising quality.

FAQ

Why choose us

Q: What causes the color difference between male and female mussels, and does freezing affect it?

A: Female mussels are bright orange, while male mussels are creamy white. Both have a rich, sweet flavor. During frozen storage, the color of male mussels may change from creamy white or grey to a slightly grey appearance.

Q: Can you freeze mussels in their shells, or should the meat be removed first?

A: To freeze, it is recommended to remove the mussel meat from the shells and wrap it in freezer paper or plastic, then over-wrap with a plastic bag. However, commercially frozen mussels are often available whole in the shell or as half-shell products.

Q: What are the signs that frozen mussels have spoiled and should be discarded?

A: If frozen mussels have taken on a strange color, developed dry spots or discolorations (freezer burn), or smell off, it is always better to discard them rather than risk getting sick. After cooking, unopened shells are often considered an indication that they were not alive and should not be consumed.
