Operating the microwave defrost setting is actually very simple. Mastering the key steps will allow you to defrost food quickly and evenly. Correct use not only saves time but also prevents the outside from being cooked while the inside remains frozen, ensuring the food's taste and safety.
General Operating Steps for the Microwave Defrost Setting
Remove and Prepare the Food
Remove frozen meat, fish, or other food from the freezer, removing any outer packaging (especially aluminum foil, metal edges, or sealed plastic bags) to prevent arcing or uneven heating.
Place the food in a microwave-safe container. Glass or ceramic containers are recommended; avoid using metal containers.
Select the Defrost Mode
Most microwaves have a "Defrost" function button, usually labeled "Defrost" or a snowflake icon.
After pressing the "Defrost" button, the system will automatically switch to low power (generally 30%-50% power) to prevent overheating.
Enter Weight or Time
Defrost by Weight: If your microwave supports this, enter the weight of the food (e.g., 500 grams). The machine will automatically calculate the time and begin defrosting.
Defrost by Time: If your microwave does not have a weighing function, you can manually set the time. Generally, 500 grams of food requires 4–6 minutes. It is recommended to set a short time initially and check and adjust it midway.
Flip and Pause for Checks Midway: When defrosting is halfway complete (e.g., 2–3 minutes), the microwave may automatically pause and beep to remind you to flip the food to ensure even heating.
For large pieces of meat or whole fish, you can separate the softened parts to improve efficiency.
End Processing: After defrosting, the food should be in a slightly soft state (with a small amount of ice crystals in the center). Cook immediately at this point to prevent bacterial growth.
Do not defrost completely to room temperature, and it is not recommended to refrozen defrosted food.
