Frozen fish can generally be stored for 3 to 12 months, depending on the type of fish, its fat content, packaging, and freezer temperature. Under stable freezing conditions below -18°C, most fish can be safely stored for about 6 months, but their taste and nutritional value will decline over time.

Frozen Storage Periods for Different Types of Fish

Low-fat fish (such as cod, sea bass, and halibut): Low in fat, they oxidize slowly and have a longer frozen storage period.

Recommended storage time: 6–8 months, no more than 10 months.

High-fat fish (such as salmon, mackerel, and tuna): Rich in unsaturated fatty acids, they oxidize and spoil very easily, developing a rancid taste.

Recommended storage time: 2–3 months; even if not expired, they should be consumed as soon as possible.

Small saltwater fish (such as ribbonfish and yellow croaker) can be stored for 6–8 months after cleaning and vacuum packaging; if not gutted or improperly packaged, it is recommended not to store for more than 3 months.

Freshwater fish (such as crucian carp and grass carp) can be stored for 3–6 months under household freezing conditions. Some sources indicate that crucian carp should not be frozen for too long, as tissue dehydration may occur after one week; however, proper freezing can extend storage to several months.
